Curriculum

At Offa’s Mead Academy we provide a broad and balanced curriculum through a thematic approach. Each class follows a subject focused theme which includes cross-curricular links to other subjects. This Academic year we will be continuing the the new curriculum, starting with History themes in October. In September, each class spent time on PSHCE and completing learning based on a class book. These included Mr Stink by David Walliams and Boy by Roald Dahl.

Summer Term- Geography focus

Year 1 From Sedbury to a Safari

Year 2- Around the World

Year 3/4- Passage to India

Year 4/5 Brooks, Beaches and Bubbling Lava

Year 6- Rainforest to Rio


Spring Term- Science focus

Reception- Winter,Jack and the Beanstalk

Year 1 Animals and Plant Life

Year 2 Sound, Living things and their habitats

Year 3/4 Solids, Liquids and Gases (Charlie and the Chocolate factory)

Y4/5 Bugs, Bones and Botany!

Year 6 Blood, bones and body bits!


Autumn Term- History focus

Reception- Marvellous Me and Bears Bears Everywhere!

Year 1- Castles

Year 2- The Great Fire of London

Year 3/4- Battles, Burial and Beowulf

Year 4/5- Egypt

Year 6- Battles, Black Out and The Blitz

As part of the new curriculum, sub-levels will no longer be used to measure attainment and progress. Click at the bottom of the page to see how we are approaching life without levels.


OFSTED 2014 stated- The breadth of learning opportunities fosters an excitement to learning and contributes well to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. 

 The themes run alongside daily Literacy and Maths sessions as well as regular Writing Skills, Maths Burst and STOP! Grammar time sessions which are provided to close attainment gaps for our pupils. The children also have daily Guided Reading sessions and DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)

OFSTED 2014 stated- The achievement of pupils has improved significantly in the short time the academy has been open. The proportion of pupils attaining at or above the levels expected for their ages is improving quickly.
