International Day of Happiness

International Day of Happiness

A profound shift in attitudes is underway all over the world. People are now recognising that 'progress' should be about increasing human happiness and wellbeing, not just growing the economy at all costs. That's why all 193 United Nations member states have adopted a resolution calling for happiness to be given greater priority and March 20 has been declared as the International Day of Happiness - a day to inspire action for a happier world.

Bringing happiness to others

The focus for International Day of Happiness is on bringing happiness to others. Creating a happier society requires action at all levels - not just from political leaders and institutions but also from us as individual citizens. When we do things to bring happiness to others, everyone benefits. It helps the people we connect with, boosts our own well-being and also inspires others to be more caring and positive too.

This Day of Happiness campaign is being led by Action for Happiness and Cheers, in partnership with a network of amazing organisations and people supporting the Day of Happiness all around the world.

Whether it’s a loved one or a generous colleague, the cheerful person who sells you your morning coffee or the kind stranger at the station who offers you their seat, we all have Happy Heroes in our lives who bring us happiness, and we all have the power to be one ourselves. Whether its one person or a whole organisation, Cheer your Happy Hero and shine a light on those who bring happiness to others.

At Offa’s Mead Academy we are holding a special assembly to explain the meaning of the day and each child will be given a Happy Hero Medal to present to someone. We are all going to say the pledge.
